Women keen on taking up dry fishing activity

They have started the spadework

Women are all set to undertake dry fishing activity in the summer season. They have started the groundwork such as cleaning the drying yards following arrival of fishes from different parts of the district.
The work is picking up in areas like Keechankuppam, Thoduvai, Thirumullaivasal, Keelamoovarkarai and Melamoovarkarai.
Dry fish has a very good market in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka as well as very good export potential.
G. Manoharan, president, Akkarapettai panchayat union, said the government should provide a drying yard for fishermen near the fish landing yard near over-bridge at Akkarapettai.
The yard work was going on and it would be completed soon.
The government should ensure hygiene in the drying yard by providing proper drains.
The government should also supply modern equipment such as driers to fisherwomen groups.
The fishermen who venture into the sea for deep sea fishing used to return to shore after three or four days.
But those using fibre glass boats will go far and return to the shore the next day itself.
They catch small fishes which can be used as feed to poultry. In the fishing activity, there will not be any waste, said Mr. Manoharan.
